Join us at Earthaven Ecovillage in beautiful North Carolina for an enriching conversation with Diana Leafe Christian, a renowned researcher, author, speaker, trainer, and community member. Diana has focused her career on studying the topic of intentional communities and ecovillages, traveling domestically and internationally to conduct research, speak at conferences, facilitate skill-development trainings, and offer consultation to individuals and communities around the world. Diana has been pursuing the question of what makes some communities survive and thrive, while the majority of them fail or never even get off the ground. She has compiled years of research findings into two approachable books, titled Creating a Life Together: Practical Tools to Grow Ecovillages and Intentional Communities and Finding Community: How to Join an Ecovillage or Intentional Community, both of which have been recognized as foundational texts in the field of community development work.

In Part I of our conversation with Diana, she shares from her own story of beginning her career as a journalist and editor in the area of community development, as well as the subsequent years of sharing back with others, through writing and training, the many lessons, themes, and dynamics that she has observed through her work studying communities around the world. Diana is recognized as an expert in the field of community development, has been the keynote speaker for numerous conferences around the world, and in 2017 she received the Fellowship for Intentional Communities’ (FIC) Kozeny Communitarian Award, a lifetime achievement award for contributions to the US communities movement.

We were honored to share this rich time and space with Diana in her home within the Earthaven Ecovillage, where she lives and contributes as a long-term community member.
